Strong Growth Anticipated for Valve and Actuator Sales in South Africa

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (industrialautomation.frost.com), South African Valves and Actuators Market, finds that the market earned revenues of $265.5 million in 2007 and estimates this to reach $668.4 million in 2014.

“The valve and actuator market is witnessing a rapid growth spurt brought about by several key national projects in the water and wastewater sector as well as the power sector,” notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Keith Mauppa. “This large-scale demand holds the potential to enable a significant turnaround from the decline this market suffered several years ago.”

Numerous manufacturers are positioning themselves to take advantage of the massive outlay in spending on infrastructure projects and refurbishments. A few large manufacturers are winning most of these projects on the back of their service quality and track record, then sourcing whatever products they need from other manufacturers. This presents the obvious opportunity for companies to improve their service quality in order to better position themselves to benefit from the large-scale spending windfall.

However, the impact of the South African skills crisis has a significant effect on the valve and actuator industry. The unavailability of a pool of skilled staff to tap into for expansion, restrains manufacturers from exploring the potential of verticals outside of the one in which they are focused.

“Although most manufacturers believe their staff to be highly skilled, they are unaware of the potential growth they could attain with a larger staff resource,” remarks Mauppa. “The focus of most manufacturers is on their primary product segment and very few of them have the staff resources to spread their reach across all product segments within the valve and actuator market.”

Companies that have recognised this limit have their own comprehensive training programmes for new employees to maintain an adequately trained pool of staff. Government policy initiatives taken by the DST and DTI will also help to create a more skilled labour force that is less susceptible to workforce flight.

Website: www.deepoffshoretechnology.com

Deepwater offshore Australia presents one of the most challenging exploration and production operating regions of the world. Operators there encounter the full scope of technology challenges – deepwater conditions, remote field locations, hostile environment, seafloor issues, difficult currents, flow assurance issues, long distances from infrastructure, logistical challenges, isolation from heavy lift and installation vessels – you name it and Australia has it all.

This year’s DOT addresses virtually every technology issue that a deepwater operator will ever have to face. These challenges open up a vast number of technical topics for the upcoming conference program.

Plan now to join industry colleagues and conference host Woodside Petroleum for the 20th Deep Offshore Technology (DOT) International Conference & Exhibition 3 – 5 December 2008 in Perth Australia.

This year’s DOT addresses virtually every technology issue that any deepwater operator will ever have to face. Plan now on presenting your abstract to the industry’s leaders and brightest minds during this unique technology showcase.

PennWell is committed to bringing DOT to the world’s most pertinent deepwater markets. Offshore Australia is experiencing a boom in offshore exploration and production. Many prominent players in the oilfield will gather for this most prestigious conference and exhibition.

Event Overview
The Deep Offshore Technology Conference is the most significant deepwater technology event in the world. This event offers:
-A unique convocation of the world’s leading executives, managers, and engineers from major and independent E&P companies.
-Visionary reports on the current and future state of technology in this frontier environment delivered by the key personnel involved in groundbreaking projects.

ITT Corp.: Slurry Valve

Filed under: Industry News, Valve Tech — Taito @ 10:31 pm

ITT recently introduced a valve design that incorporates the patent-pending Guillotine Gate™. Unlike traditional knife gate valves, the Fabri-Valve SV1 push-through slurry valve features a gate design that slices through high-density slurry at an angle. The gate slices cleanly through tough slurries and prevents the seat from cutting and tearing, while also reducing the amount of discharge from the valve.

Three key features combine to make the SV1 more durable, with less maintenance than competitive push-through slurry valves. Along with slicing through slurries more efficiently, these features prevent seat damage, which is a common issue with many push-through slurry valves. The angled-cut Guillotine Gate design slices through media the way that an angled knife would cleanly slice through a tomato, rather than simply pushing through and squishing the seats.

The slick plastic, ultra-high molecular weight (UHMW) polyethylene gate support liners within the SV1 guide the gate through the entire stroke, shielding the body of the valve from direct contact with the media while reducing downstream gate deflection and preventing the gate from cutting the seat. Seat protection is key in reducing downtime on slurry valves. Seat damage is a common issue with many push-through slurry valves, leading to a seat replacement or whole valve replacement to fix the problem.

The proprietary engineered polymer seats reduce friction and also increase seat life, particularly in high-solid slurries. The Fabri-Valve SV1’s resilient material requires no lubrication, which saves on maintenance costs. Even valves that claim to self-lubricate, as opposed to those that need to be manually lubricated, can create maintenance troubles because lubrication can trap particles, and gritty lubrication can eventually affect valve operation.

The SV1 is designed for easy installation and maintenance. The gate can be completely removed and replaced while the valve is under pressure, actuation can be changed in the field, and valves with manual operators or air cylinders have self-supporting yokes to provide valve orientation flexibility.
